From a receipt photo to a saved expense

Short answer

Finman's receipt scanner turns a photo into a transaction you approve. With the AI features on, an OpenAI GPT model reads the merchant, total, date and line items and suggests a category; otherwise text recognition on Finman's server reads the merchant, total and date. You check the fields, choose the account and save. Free during the open beta.

Scan a receipt free How it reads receipts

  • PhotoThe phone camera or an image file, straight from the browser.
  • ReadsMerchant, total and date; with AI on, also line items and a suggested category.
  • CurrencyCAD, USD, EUR, GBP, PLN and UAH are recognised; a plain $ is read as Canadian dollars.
  • CheckA review screen lists the fields it found, and you correct anything before saving.
  • DuplicatesOne receipt creates at most one transaction, even after a double tap.

AI reading or server text recognition

Which path runs depends on whether you use the AI features. If the AI reading fails, Finman falls back to text recognition, so the receipt still gets read.

01 →Photo

Taken with the phone camera or picked from your files.

02 → two paths
AI on

An OpenAI GPT model, reached through Finman's server, reads merchant, total, date and line items and suggests a category.

AI off

Text recognition on Finman's server reads merchant, total and date from English, Ukrainian or Russian receipts.

03You check, then save

Correct any field, pick the account, create the transaction. The transaction is booked only when you do.

How Finman reads a receipt: one photo, two reading paths, one check by you.

Photos that read first time

Clear, flat photos read best. When a receipt is faded or crumpled, add it by hand in the same screen.

  1. 01

    Flat and whole

Lay the receipt on a table and get the top line with the store name and the total line in one frame.

  2. 02

    Even light

Shoot from straight above, away from glare on thermal paper, so the digits stay sharp.

  3. 03

    One receipt per photo

Each photo becomes one receipt record and at most one transaction.

  4. 04

    Recent dates

A date more than two years back or in the future is treated as unreadable, and the transaction takes today's date unless you change it.

Where the photo goes, and where the expense lands

The photo

Kept on Finman's server

The receipt image is stored with the receipt record in Finman's own database, and you can delete the receipt at any time. With the AI features on, the image is also sent to OpenAI through Finman's server for reading. The AI features switch on when you open the AI page or send a chat message. All cases are listed in the privacy policy.

The expense

Counted like any other transaction

A saved receipt becomes a transaction in the account you picked, with its category, so it counts in your budgets, spending reports and forecast. The receipts screen shows how many receipts you added this month and their total. That is the app to track expenses and receipts in one place.

Receipt scanner questions

The technology behind it: how receipt scanning works.

Is there a free receipt scanner app?
Finman's receipt scanner is free during the open beta, with no card. It runs in the browser on Android, iPhone and desktop. After the beta the paid plans are Pro at $9 and Family at $19 a month; payments are not switched on yet.
How does Finman read a receipt?
With the AI features on, an OpenAI GPT model reads the merchant, total, date and line items from the photo and suggests a category. Otherwise text recognition on Finman's server reads the merchant, total and date. Either way you check the fields and save the transaction yourself.
Does the receipt scanner work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Open app.finman.money in the phone's browser and use the camera from the Receipts screen. On a computer you can upload an image file. Store versions for Google Play and the App Store are not published yet.
What if the scan reads something wrong?
The review screen shows which fields were recognised; correct any of them before you create the transaction. If nothing could be read, Finman asks you to enter the details by hand, and a saved receipt can still be edited.
Is my receipt photo sent anywhere?
The photo is stored with the receipt in Finman's own database. With the AI features on, it is also sent to OpenAI through Finman's server to be read. Without them, it is read by text recognition on Finman's server. The privacy policy lists every case where data leaves the server.
Can I track expenses and receipts in one app?
Yes. A scanned receipt becomes a transaction in your chosen account and counts in budgets, categories and reports next to your imported bank transactions. The receipts screen shows this month's count and total.
Which languages and currencies can it read?
Text recognition on the server reads English, Ukrainian and Russian receipts. Currencies recognised include CAD, USD, EUR, GBP, PLN and UAH; a plain dollar sign is read as Canadian dollars, and you can change the amount or account before saving.
